Choosing the Right Ostomy Bag: A Complete Guide

6 min read

One-Piece vs. Two-Piece Systems

One-piece systems combine the skin barrier and pouch into a single unit, offering a low profile and simpler application. Two-piece systems separate the barrier and pouch, allowing you to change the pouch without removing the skin barrier — useful for sensitive skin.

Measuring Your Stoma

Stoma size can change in the weeks following surgery. Use a stoma measuring guide to check the diameter regularly, and always cut your barrier 1-2mm larger than the stoma to avoid skin irritation while preventing output from contacting the skin.

Drainable vs. Closed Pouches

Drainable pouches are recommended for ileostomies and higher-output stomas since they can be emptied several times a day. Closed pouches are typically used for colostomies with more formed output and are usually replaced once or twice daily.

When to Consult Your Stoma Therapist

If you notice persistent leakage, skin redness, or discomfort despite correct fitting, consult a stoma care nurse or your prescribing physician — this may indicate the wrong product type or a peristomal skin complication.
