Living Well with a Stoma: Diet, Travel & Exercise

7 min read

Diet After Surgery

Reintroduce foods gradually in the weeks after surgery. High-fibre and gas-producing foods can be reintroduced slowly while monitoring output consistency. Stay well hydrated, particularly with an ileostomy.

Exercise & Physical Activity

Most people can return to light exercise within a few weeks, and most sports within 2-3 months once cleared by your surgeon. A support belt can add reassurance during higher-impact activity.

Travelling with a Stoma

Pack double your expected supplies in carry-on luggage, carry a travel certificate/letter for airport security, and identify pharmacy or medical support options at your destination in advance.

Emotional Wellbeing

Adjusting to life with a stoma is a process. Many patients find peer support groups and stoma care nurses invaluable during the first few months — you're not alone in this adjustment.
